Tiger Milk Mushroom Atrium
Did you know that there are 8 species of Lignosus (Tiger Milk Mushroom, short for TMM) in the world,of which 3 can be found in Malaysia. Dr. Tan Chon Seng was responsible in naming two of the Lignosus species in Malaysia: L. cameronensis & L. tigris.
According to Dr. Tan, each species has different medicinal properties. But, only Lignosus rhinocerus is the species with well documented history of use for lung and respiratory health, chronic cough, sinus, asthmas and etc, which are not found in other species.
During the first 3 years of his R&D, Dr. Tan had also discovered that many plant tubers or tree bud tubers or certain fungi sclerotia like Fuling, Pleurotus tuber-regium etc. look very similar to the TMM sclerotia.
How to differentiate the 3 Lignosus species? “TMM sclerotia can only be identified and differentiate through DNA identification, as looks can be deceiving, it is difficult to tell which one is the L. rhinocerus among the 3 species if judging from naked eyes.” said Dr. Tan.
